Staging (Strategy)
The speed and sequence of strategic moves — what happens first, what happens later, and why that order matters.
Staging is the fourth facet of the Strategy Diamond: the speed and sequence of a company's strategic moves. It answers not just what a company will do, but in what order and at what pace.
Staging decisions are shaped by three main factors: resource availability (can the company afford to do everything at once), urgency (how fast competitors or market windows are moving), and the need to secure credibility or capability early to make later moves possible.
A company can have the right arenas, vehicles, and differentiators in mind, and still fail if it stages them incorrectly — for example, entering a new geography before establishing the operational capability to serve it profitably.
