Strategy Diamond

Vehicles (Strategy)

The means by which a company enters or expands within its chosen arenas — organic growth, joint ventures, licensing, or mergers and acquisitions.

Vehicles is the second facet of the Strategy Diamond, answering how a company will get to its target arenas. Common vehicles include internal (organic) development, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, licensing agreements, franchising, and strategic alliances.

The choice of vehicle carries real trade-offs. Organic growth preserves control and culture but is slower and capital-intensive. Acquisitions are faster but introduce integration risk. Alliances and licensing spread risk but limit how much of the value creation a company can capture.

A company's chosen vehicles should match its capabilities: a company with no track record integrating acquisitions but a stated strategy of 'growth through M&A' has a vehicle mismatch, even if the target arenas are well chosen.
